The University of Hartford's men and women's basketball teams both sailed to victories over the University of New Hampshire this past weekend and STN was there to cover them live at the Chase Arena.
The women cruised to a victory over the Wildcats on Saturday with an 74-44 win. The lady Hawks improved to 19-5 overall and 9-2 in the America East Conference. The Hawks were led by Nestle Purina One America East Player of the Game Diana Delva, who led the team with 15 points. She was one of four players to finish with double figures with Danielle Hood, MaryLynne Schaefer, and Mary Silvia, finishing with 14, 13, and 11 points respectively. Senior Courtney Gomez saw a career high seven assists in the game which ties her career high set earlier in the season against Kansas. Rookie Jonyce Hollins also set a career record with seven rebounds on the day, tying with Diana Delva. Hartford saw 18 total assists, and 12 steals led by Schaefer with a season high four steals. The Hawks forced UNH into 24 turnovers and converted those mistakes into 26 points. The Hawks came out strong in the first half and never let the Wildcats pull ahead. At one point of the game UNH trailed Hartford by 34 points. The Hawks 74 points is the highest point total in conference play this season. The women will be in action on Wednesday at 7 PM to take on the Binghamton University Bearcats.
The men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Sunday over UNH for the first time since the 2003-2004 season with record breaking numbers. The men set a school record for three-pointers with 18 in an 82-63 win. Hartford, who are 15-13 overall and 4-9 in the America East, remain in second place in the conference behind UMBC while UNH falls to 17-8 overall and 9-4. Sophomore starter Joe Zeglinski broke a school record, shooting 9-of-10 from behind the arc to finish with a career high 31 points in the game. The Hawks also shot a season high 67 percent long range on the day. Rookie Morgan Sabia also had a career setting day with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 from the three point range. Sabia and junior transfer Warren McLendon each had a team high seven rebounds. Junior Michael Turner had five assists on the day which gives him 100 assists on the season. Turner became the first player ever in Hartford's Division I history to record 200 points, 150 rebounds, 100 assists, and 50 steals in a single season. The record breaking team will next play the University of Vermont on Wednesday, February 20. Tipoff is at 7 pm.
